Sixteen years, three countries
Oliver started in tree work at 15 in South London, and went on to a diploma in arboriculture. After it he spent about six years on UK tree work of every kind: clearing trees from power lines and railway corridors, and working in people’s gardens.
Then came about seven years in Australia on big eucalypts, the kind of tree that tests any climber. Crane removals were part of most weeks: tall gums over power lines, over roofs and between brick houses, taken apart piece by piece.
In New Zealand he has managed over 10,000 trees for a city council. Today he and the team work right across Nelson.
