Arborist in Stoke, Nelson

Stoke has more homes than any other part of Nelson, and plenty of big old trees between them. The team takes down and prunes trees here from Main Road Stoke up to Marsden Valley and Ngawhatu.

What will it take in Stoke?

Three things that help Oliver plan a job here before he comes out.

  1. On the foothills in Marsden Valley or Ngawhatu? Say whether the tree stands above or below the house, and how steep the ground is around it.
  2. Old orchard or shelter trees on the flat? Count them, and send one photo that takes in the whole row and the fence.
  3. Tree on the bank of Orphanage Creek or Poorman Valley Stream? Mention the stream and send a photo of the bank, so the team can plan where the truck and chipper go.

How the team does it

  • Climbed and taken down in sections, each piece lowered on ropes, or felled in one where there’s room.
  • Branches chipped on site, and the stump ground out if you want it gone.
  • The work area cleaned up before the team leaves.

What Oliver needs for the quote

  • A photo of the whole tree, with the house in shot
  • Its height against the house
  • What’s under or near it
  • The way in: gate, side path or drive
  • Your street

Trees and sections in Stoke

Stoke was orchard country from the 1890s. After the Second World War the orchards were cut up into house sections, starting with 1950s streets around Arapiki and Andrew Streets. Building hasn’t stopped since: more than 1,200 new homes were consented here between 2013 and 2026, many on the foothills, so a lot of newer houses now stand beside trees planted long before them.

Some of Nelson’s oldest planted trees are here. Thomas Marsden laid out Isel Park around 1850, and its tulip tree is counted among the tallest in the country. On Suffolk Road the Oaklands woodland holds 80 heritage English oaks, the biggest single listing in the city’s plan, and Main Road Stoke has listed macrocarpa, a hoop pine at Stoke School and old redwoods.

Up the hill, Marsden Valley and Ngawhatu carry redwoods and giant sequoias, while Orphanage Creek and Poorman Valley Stream run down through the suburb. Slopes, streams and big conifers are why the way in and the drop zone matter on a Stoke job.

Tree work in Stoke

Great job by Ollie removing a tree for us here in Nelson. Turned up on time, explained the plan clearly, and worked safely and carefully given how close the tree was to the house. Left the section completely clean afterwards too. Fair price and top communication throughout. Highly recommend for anyone needing tree work done right.

Stoke questions

Something else? Call 0800 000 105 or send the tree through.

Do you work right across Stoke?

Yes. From Main Road Stoke and the streets off Songer Street up to Marsden Valley, Ngawhatu and the foothills. Put your street in the form and Oliver will come out and quote the job.

Can you take out old orchard or shelter trees?

Yes. A row of old fruit or shelter trees comes down tree by tree like any removal, and the stumps can be ground out after. Send one photo that shows the whole row.
