Arborist in Atawhai, Nelson
Atawhai climbs the hills above Nelson Haven, and its big homes sit on slopes with big trees above and below them. Recent work here includes a crown reduction that kept a garden tree’s natural shape.

What will it take in Atawhai?
Three things that help Oliver plan a job here before he comes out.
- On the slope above Atawhai Drive? Say how far the tree is from where a vehicle can park, and whether there are steps on the way.
- Big macrocarpa, redwood or gum? Give its height against the house: one storey, two, or more.
- Say which way the tree leans: toward the house, the road below or the neighbour’s roof.
How the team does it
- Climbed and taken down in sections, each piece lowered on ropes, or felled in one where there’s room.
- Branches chipped on site, and the stump ground out if you want it gone.
- The work area cleaned up before the team leaves.
What Oliver needs for the quote
- A photo of the whole tree, with the house in shot
- Its height against the house
- What’s under or near it
- The way in: gate, side path or drive
- Your street
Trees and sections in Atawhai
Atawhai stretches along the haven north of the city, with State Highway 6 running through it and Brooklands and Dodson Valley inside its edges. Nelson had little flat land left after the war, so suburbs like this one climbed the foothills, and the 1990s are the commonest build decade for Atawhai’s houses.
The homes run big, with 34% having four or more bedrooms. The slopes carry some big trees too: the city’s plan lists a heritage macrocarpa in Brooklands, a redwood and a Tasmanian blue gum in Dodson Valley, oaks and a pair of redwoods along Atawhai Drive, and a native bush woodland beside the drive. Wakapuaka Cemetery, in use since 1861, has a Moreton Bay fig and a weeping pine among its listed trees.
In the August 2022 storm the highway through Atawhai was shut, and residents were let out during a two-hour opening. On a hillside, which way a tree leans and what sits below it decide how it comes down.

Atawhai questions
Something else? Call 0800 000 105 or send the tree through.
Do you work in Brooklands and Dodson Valley?
Yes. Both are part of Atawhai, and the team works there and on up the haven to Marybank. Put your street in the form.
Can you reduce a tree instead of removing it?
Yes, when a smaller tree is what you want. The October job here took an ornamental tree down a size and kept its natural shape.
