What will it take in Maitai?
Three things that help Oliver plan a job here before he comes out.
- Up Maitai Valley Road? Give the house number, and say whether a truck can turn at your gate.
- Tree on the river bank or the esplanade edge? Say how close it is to the water and send a photo from the bank.
- Lifestyle block with poplars or pines? Count them, and say whether you’d like the wood left in rounds.
How the team does it
- Climbed and taken down in sections, each piece lowered on ropes, or felled in one where there’s room.
- Branches chipped on site, and the stump ground out if you want it gone.
- The work area cleaned up before the team leaves.
What Oliver needs for the quote
- A photo of the whole tree, with the house in shot
- Its height against the house
- What’s under or near it
- The way in: gate, side path or drive
- Your street
Trees and sections in Maitai
The suburb sits on the north bank of the Maitai River, south of The Wood and about a kilometre from the cathedral. Its reserves include Branford Park, the Maitai Cricket Ground, the Maitai Arboretum and the river esplanade, with Hanby Park’s walking and BMX trails across the water.
The 1950s are the commonest build decade, and about 12% of properties are lifestyle blocks, many reached by Maitai Valley Road as it climbs, steep and winding, toward the reservoir.
The Maitai is Nelson’s largest river, draining about 9,000 hectares, and its banks near town carry big trees: Branford Park has listed horse chestnut, walnut, cottonwood and black poplars, and the motor camp has listed redwoods and Monterey cypress. When the river burst its banks on 18 August 2022, the occupants of 233 homes near it were evacuated.

Great job by Ollie removing a tree for us here in Nelson. Turned up on time, explained the plan clearly, and worked safely and carefully given how close the tree was to the house. Left the section completely clean afterwards too. Fair price and top communication throughout. Highly recommend for anyone needing tree work done right.
Tree work in Maitai
We used Ollie’s services to remove some big oak trees from our property as they were down a steep driveway that overhangs a road. He did an excellent job of removing them safely and in a timely manner. Will be recommending him to everyone we know in Nelson as he is quick, efficient and safe. Thank you Ollie!
Maitai questions
Something else? Call 0800 000 105 or send the tree through.
Can a truck get up Maitai Valley Road to my place?
Tell Oliver whether a truck can turn at your gate. Where it can’t, the wood and branches are carried out to where it can park.
Do you remove poplars and other big riverside trees?
Yes. Big poplars, walnuts and conifers near the river come down in sections, or are felled where there’s room, with the branches chipped on site.
