Tree removal in Nelson for big trees near the house
When a tree has to go and it stands over the roof, the fence or the drive, it comes down in pieces. The team climbs it, cuts it in sections and lowers each one on ropes, then chips the branches and leaves the place clean.

What a removal takes
A common Nelson case: a tree taller than the roof, right beside the house, with a narrow side path in.
- NearHouse or roof
- HeightAbove the roof
- Way inNarrow side path
How the team does it
- Climbed and taken down in sections, each piece lowered on ropes clear of the roof.
- The crown comes down first, then the trunk in rounds.
- Branches carried out along the side path to the chipper on the drive or street.
- The stump ground out below the surface, if you want it gone.
- The work area cleaned up before the team leaves.
What Oliver needs for the quote
- A photo of the whole tree, with the house in shot
- How far the trunk is from the house
- A photo from far enough back to show the top
- The narrowest width of the gate or side path
- Your suburb
From the top of a gum in Australia: a section lowered on a rope between two roofs.
How a big tree comes down
A tree beside a house is taken apart from the top. A climber goes up on ropes, takes the smaller limbs first and lowers each one to the ground crew, then works down the main stems. The trunk comes last, in rounds short enough to lower or roll away.
Nothing is dropped where it could hit the roof, the spouting, a fence or the garden. Where a tree has open ground on one side and room to land, it’s felled in one instead, with the drop zone taped off first.
Oliver learned this on big trees: years of eucalypt removals in Australia, many between houses like the gum in the photo, and over 10,000 trees managed for a city council.
Great job by Ollie removing a tree for us here in Nelson. Turned up on time, explained the plan clearly, and worked safely and carefully given how close the tree was to the house. Left the section completely clean afterwards too. Fair price and top communication throughout. Highly recommend for anyone needing tree work done right.

Leaning, dead or damaged trees
A tree that leans, has split or has died is still a removal, just planned around its weak point. The lean decides which way the pieces come down, and a dead tree is lowered in smaller sections because its wood can’t take the same load.
Big trees on awkward ground are the jobs worth getting right: a steep drive, a road below, a neighbour’s roof on the far side. Tell Oliver about them when you send the tree through, and he’ll look at them when he comes out to quote.
We used Ollie’s services to remove some big oak trees from our property as they were down a steep driveway that overhangs a road. He did an excellent job of removing them safely and in a timely manner. Will be recommending him to everyone we know in Nelson as he is quick, efficient and safe. Thank you Ollie!

Chipped on site, cleaned up after
The branches go through the chipper on site, so there’s no pile left on your lawn. The truck and chipper park as close as the way in allows, and when the chipper can’t reach the tree, the team carries the branches out to it.
The work zone is taped off while the tree comes down, and the section is raked and tidied before the team goes. If you’d like the trunk wood left behind, say so when Oliver quotes.
Ollie was excellent to work with, from quoting to job completion, clean work done around the property in Stoke.

What sets the price
- How tall and wide the tree is
- What’s under it: roof, lines, fence or garden
- The way in for the team and the chipper
- How much wood and branch there is to clear
- Whether the stump comes out too
Oliver comes out, meets you and quotes the job, so the price is set before any work starts.

Will taking the tree down damage my roof or garden?
Each piece is lowered on ropes rather than dropped, so it lands where the team wants it, clear of the roof, the spouting and the garden beds.
Do you take the stump out as well?
Yes, if you want it gone. The stump is ground out below the surface, so the spot can go back to lawn or garden.
What do you need from me for a quote?
A photo of the whole tree with the house in shot, its height against the house, what’s under it and the way in. Then Oliver comes out, meets you and quotes the job.
Can you remove a tree that’s leaning or dead?
Yes. The lean decides which way the pieces come down, and a dead tree is taken down in smaller sections. Send a photo that shows the lean or the dead wood.
Does every tree need council approval to come down?
No. Only trees protected under Nelson’s resource management plan need the council’s approval. If yours is a big old tree that might be listed, mention it when you send it through.
