Tree pruning in Nelson: reductions, crown lifts and views

Some big trees need to come down a size rather than come out. The team climbs and reduces them, lifts crowns off roofs and opens hillside views, as on recent jobs in Britannia Heights and Nelson South.

What a reduction takes

A big tree crowding the house and the view: brought down a size and lifted clear of the roof.

  • NearHouse or roof
  • HeightAbove the roof
  • GoalSmaller, with the view back
reducedlifted

How the team does it

  • Climbed on ropes, with the cuts made back to side branches so the tree keeps a natural shape.
  • Limbs over the roof and spouting taken off and lowered, not dropped.
  • The crown lifted so light and the view come back under it.
  • Branches chipped on site, and the section cleaned up after.

What Oliver needs for the quote

  • A photo of the whole tree, with the house in shot
  • Which branches are the problem
  • The view or light you want back
  • The way in for the team
  • Your suburb

After: the view over Tasman Bay back.

Big trees brought down a size

In September the team reduced several mature pin oaks round a school field in Nelson South. Each one was climbed, its crown brought in and down, and the branches chipped inside a taped-off work zone.

A reduction cuts each limb back to a side branch that can take over, rather than cutting it off flat. The tree ends up smaller but still looks like itself, and it isn’t left with stubs that sprout a mess of new growth.

Excellent gentleman. Very friendly and knows his job well.

Views and light on hillside sections

Nelson’s hillside streets were built for the view, and trees grow into it. In Britannia Heights in July the team pruned trees back off a weatherboard house, let light back onto the washing line and re-opened the view over Tasman Bay.

In Nelson South in October, new home owners got their outlook over the city back: trees and shrubs were cut back or taken out, and the Norfolk pine that framed the view was kept.

Oliver has done a wonderful job for us. Always turned up on time, great communicator, great ideas and best of all ..tidies up beautifully afterwards..highly recommended. Thanks Oliver

Off the roof, off the house

Limbs that rub the roof, fill the spouting or hang over the deck can be taken off without touching the rest of the tree. A crown lift raises the canopy so you can walk, park or mow under it.

Every limb over the house is lowered on a rope, not dropped, and the branches go through the chipper on site.

After: pruned back off the house.

What sets the price

  • How big the tree is and how much comes off
  • What’s under it: roof, deck, lines or garden
  • How many trees are in the job
  • The way in for the team and the chipper

Oliver comes out, meets you and quotes the job, so the price is set before any work starts.

Tree pruning questions

Something else? Call 0800 000 105 or send the tree through.

Will a reduction make my tree look butchered?

No. Each limb is cut back to a side branch that can take over, so the tree is smaller but keeps a natural shape, as on the Atawhai crown reduction in October.

Can you open up a view without taking the tree out?

Yes. The branches in the way come out and the rest of the tree stays. Say which way the house faces and what you want to see when you send it through.

Do you prune big trees as well as small ones?

Yes. The September pin oak reductions at a Nelson South school were big, climbed trees, and Oliver has worked big trees across the UK, Australia and New Zealand.

Is pruning or removal better for my tree?

That depends on the tree and what you want from it. Oliver looks the tree over when he comes out to quote, and you can get a price for either.
