What will it take in Tāhunanui?
Three things that help Oliver plan a job here before he comes out.
- Rental property? Give the tenant’s contact or say how the team gets in, and who the quote should go to.
- Palm or tall conifer near the beach? Say how close it is to the house, the power lines and the street.
- House on the hill above Tahunanui Drive? Say how steep the drive is and whether the tree stands on a bank.
How the team does it
- Climbed and taken down in sections, each piece lowered on ropes, or felled in one where there’s room.
- Branches chipped on site, and the stump ground out if you want it gone.
- The work area cleaned up before the team leaves.
What Oliver needs for the quote
- A photo of the whole tree, with the house in shot
- Its height against the house
- What’s under or near it
- The way in: gate, side path or drive
- Your street
Trees and sections in Tāhunanui
Tāhunanui sits between Port Nelson and the airport, about 3.3 km from the cathedral, on the beach it’s named for: the name translates as ‘large sandbank’. Rocks Road opened in 1899, the council bought the sands the same year, and the local association planted trees along the beach soon after.
The hills above were subdivided from the late 1930s and the suburb grew fast after the war, with the 1970s the commonest build decade. Today 57% of homes have one or two bedrooms, and 44% of households aren’t owner-occupied, the highest of the twelve suburbs we profile.
The listed trees run to palms and natives: 16 Canary Island palms in the library gardens, a rātā on Tahunanui Drive, two kauri on Beach Road and a dawn redwood on Tosswill Road. Nelson sees about 30 strong-wind days a year, most of them in spring and summer.
