Arborist in Moana, Nelson

Moana’s streets climb the hill above Tāhunanui, with views over Tasman Bay and big street trees along Princes Drive. Steep drives and banks shape how the team plans a job here.

Oliver quotes; he and the team do the work

What will it take in Moana?

Three things that help Oliver plan a job here before he comes out.

  1. Steep drive off Moana Avenue or Bisley Avenue? Say where a van can park and how many steps lie between it and the tree.
  2. Tree on a bank or above a retaining wall? Say so, and send a photo of the base.
  3. Tree in the way of the bay view? Say which way the house faces and which branches block it.

How the team does it

  • Climbed and taken down in sections, each piece lowered on ropes, or felled in one where there’s room.
  • Branches chipped on site, and the stump ground out if you want it gone.
  • The work area cleaned up before the team leaves.

What Oliver needs for the quote

  • A photo of the whole tree, with the house in shot
  • Its height against the house
  • What’s under or near it
  • The way in: gate, side path or drive
  • Your street

Trees and sections in Moana

Moana sits off State Highway 6, directly north-east of Tāhunanui and about 2.7 km from the cathedral. Bisley Avenue and Moana Avenue were finished in 1929 and opened most of the hill to housing, and a second wave of building came in the 2000s.

The road reserves are lined with big trees: 40 pōhutukawa along Princes Drive and Moana Avenue, 29 redwoods on the Princes Drive reserve, a heritage London plane on Bisley Avenue and a kauri further along it. The homes are mostly family-sized, with three or four bedrooms.

The hills above Tāhunanui also carry the Tāhunanui Slump, a slow landslide of about 30 hectares with around 120 homes on it, which the August 2022 rain set moving again. In that storm ten Tahunanui Hills households had to leave because of a slip.

Moana questions

Something else? Call 0800 000 105 or send the tree through.

Can you prune a tree to open the bay view?

Yes. View work takes out the branches in the way and keeps the rest of the tree. Say which way the house faces when you send it through.

What if the tree is on a bank above a retaining wall?

Send a photo of the base and the wall. On a bank, pieces are lowered on ropes rather than dropped, so nothing lands on the wall.

Send the tree through and Oliver rings to talk it over. Then he comes out, meets you, looks the tree over and quotes the job. Once you’re happy with it, he and the team book in the work.

What to send Oliver

  • A photo of the whole tree, with the house or fence in shot
  • Its height against the house
  • What’s under or near it: roof, lines, fence, drive
  • The way in: gate width, side path, steep drive
  • Your suburb
  • Any timing that matters to you
